Sparks Nevada, situated on the swamplands east of Reno, is one of the region's most charming cities. Here, residents take pride in calling it home while visitors enjoy its many amenities. In 1904, the Southern Pacific Railroad moved its largest roundhouse (at that time) from Wadsworth, NV to what would later become known as Rail City - a name that would become synonymous with the city's growth.
History
Sparks Nevada is a town with an exciting history that should not be missed.
It boasts numerous attractions and restaurants to discover. Plus, there are
plenty of parks to enjoy along with the Great Basin Brewery for some local
craft beer enjoyment! Sparks' history is one of transformation and growth. From
its start as a railroad town on the swamps east of Reno,
it has blossomed into an energetic modern city where families can find plenty
to do and shop. In the early years of the town's growth, residents would sell
their cattle to California-bound emigrants as they embarked on the West. This
practice became common in the area and provided settlers with some extra income
from their labor. However, due to health hazards, this practice was soon
outlawed. This resulted in a decrease in emigrant numbers and an increase in
settlers.
In 1904, the Southern Pacific Railroad constructed a switchyard and maintenance
sheds at Wadsworth. Soon thereafter, residents from surrounding towns moved in
- initially called Harriman but eventually becoming known simply as Sparks
after Nevada's then-Governor John Sparks. Once Reno had grown considerably, a
streetcar line was established between Reno and Sparks to make transportation
easier. This proved particularly advantageous to those employed on the railroad
who needed quick access to either their workplaces or homes in Reno. The
streetcar line also spurred the development of a railroad roundhouse and other
businesses associated with it, providing immense benefits to the community as
well as significant sources of revenue for the city.
After the railroad industry closed down, Sparks' economy experienced a
period of stagnation. However, in 2006 it began to rebound with an influx of
mining and tourism activity. One of the most renowned entertainment venues in
the area is Nugget Casino and Resort. Here, it features headlining country and pop artists to perform on
its stage as well as a convention center. Plus, they host annual music
festivals and give back to local communities by providing food donations during
Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.
