Whitney Nevada is a small community east of Las Vegas on Boulder Highway - previously US 93, US 95, and US 466. As an ideal

formations in the area. Just a little over two hours northeast of Las Vegas
lies the stunning terrain of Boulder Canyon National Monument. A 4WD high-clearance
vehicle is highly recommended for this adventure; otherwise, plan to arrive by
bus. The primary road into Whitney Pocket is Gold Butte Road, which turns from pavement to graded dirt as you
approach. Once there, you'll find a large parking area with an interactive map
indicating several dirt roads branching off in different directions - each
offering its own special qualities and attractions.
We chose the shortest of these routes which circled around the north side of
the main rocky outcrop. It provided a nice chance to view the landscape and
spot some petroglyphs along the way. This area has a wealth of historical
significance. It's home to the Cistern, a stone dam and storeroom constructed
by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Depression Era. While open for
visitors to explore, caution should be exercised as this dam is quite high up. Another
fascinating fact about this area is that it was home to numerous Native
American tribes throughout history. You can still view petroglyphs and an
ancient agave-roasting pit at certain spots.
During the Gold Butte gold rush of 1906, more than 2000 miners came to this area,
and it served as an important stopping point for travelers on their quest to
strike it rich. Photographers have long loved its vibrantly colored sandstone
and Joshua Tree-covered peaks; furthermore, Gold Butte serves as a popular jumping-off
point for off-roaders and offers many primitive camping areas.
